[Alachua County SKYWARN]
Severe Weather Reporting Criteria
What and How To Report
=====================================================================

WHAT TO REPORT:

During a SKYWARN net only the following severe weather related reports shall be taken:

  • Hail - greater than 1/2-inch in diameter...relate to coin size, if possible.
  • Damaging Winds:
  • Funnel Cloud (Look for persistant, rapid rotation.)
  • Tornado, Waterspout (Look for rotation and debris coming up from surface.)
  • Significant Flooding
  • HOW TO REPORT:

    1. If you do not have a radio with an active SKYWARN Net to report to, you should call NWS-Jax using the unlisted 800-number on your Spotter ID Card. Identify yourself using the information upon the front of the card, and issue your report according to the instructions upon the back of the card.
    2. If you are an amateur radio operator, you should pass the report to the NCS of the local SKYWARN Net, instead. The NCS will then relay your report to NWS-Jax and to the Alachua Co. Ofc. of Emergency Management. *
    3. If you are active in local REACT (CB) or GMRS/FRS you should report to the NCS of your own Net (if applicable) and similar procedures will be followed. Otherwise, you should use the unlisted 800-number. *

    * (The NCS of each radio net should appoint liasons who would serve to keep each net apprised of events spotted by each net so as to avoid duplication of event reports that are handed to the NWS.)
